Puppy Pick Process

Puppy Pick Process

The AwesomeDoodle Pick List. How does it work?
When you sign up to get your new AussieDoodle Puppy, you’ll go on our waiting list. Remember, AwesomeDoodle never has “homeless” puppies.

What kind of puppy do you want?
What size and color do you want? Do you want a puppy from a certain mama? You don’t need to answer these questions right away. However, if you have “must have” criteria, let us know. For example, if you tell us you ONLY want a dog under 25lbs, we won’t contact you with any puppies above that weight range.

When do we let our families pick a puppy?
When we have a new litter, we take photos and a video of each puppy when they are deemed healthy (usually at 1 week old). When we get to your name on the list, we will offer you ANY puppies available that meet your criteria.  You’re welcome to pick a puppy, or pass until the next litter comes along. If you pass, you won’t lose your spot on the waiting list. Your name continues to move to the top of our list as people above you pick puppies. On our next litter, we will start at the top, and work our way down again. We may NOT get to you on the next round, if people above you (who passed on the previous litter) decide to pick a puppy from the new litter. You ALWAYS have the option to change your mind about what kind of puppy you want. For example, some people tell us they ONLY want a certain gender. Then later, they learn how both males and females are equally as affectionate and easy to train, then they tell us they will consider male OR female, opening the options for 50% more puppies.

At AwesomeDoodle, you’ll pick your puppy when it is a week old so you will not know eye color when you choose.

Where am on on your waiting list?
This is a common question, and while it seems like an easy question, it’s difficult to answer. For 2018, our average number of families on the list at any time is 180. While that may seem like a ridiculous number, it’s for good reason.  We’re AwesomeDoodle, we have a dozen different colors of AussieDoodles, two different genders, and 5 different size ranges. Not to mention we have a couple dozen mommies around the countries having babies. Everyone wants something different! Here is a REAL snippet from our waiting list (names removed for privacy).

  1. (either gender, merle, ready Jan 30 2018, Robin or sugar only)
  2. (female, no black, under 20 lbs, merle)
  3. (either gender, red/blk based puppy or blue merle, 20+lbs)
  4. (either gender, merle, 20-45 lbs)
  5. (male, 25+, red based puppy)
  6. (either gender, under 30 lbs, merle, Aug 16th)
  7. (male only, red based puppy, <35 lbs, ready Oct)
  8. (either gender, blue merle, 10-35 lbs, ready nov)
  9. (female, any color, 15-25 lbs, ready May 2019)
  10. (either gender, blue merle, 20-35 lbs)
  11. (under 35 lbs, either gender, red merle, ready March 2019)
  12. (female, red based/blue merle, under 25 lbs, ready Aug 2018)
  13. (either gender, any color, any size)

Now, imagine you were number 13, and you ask us, “Where are we on the list?” If I told you #13, you would be disappointed. But take a closer look at the list; what happens when we get a Black Phantom from Libby that will be 30+lbs? Guess what? Now you’re number 1 on the list. You see? The number is irrelevant. If we kept a separate list for every possible combination, we would have 2000 lists and it would be impossible to keep up with that. In addition, families change their minds often. For example, the family for #4 might change their mind and decide they want a phantom. Now, family number 13 is #2 on the list.

What we CAN tell you, is the average wait time, based on our history. This link will show you all the different colors we have. Of course, restricting by size and gender may add more wait time, but these wait times are based on real wait times in the history of AwesomeDoodle. And again, we’re not a puppy farm so you’ll never see us with tons of puppies available. We will NOT produce puppies if there are not enough people on the list. We don’t believe in making homeless puppies.

We know the wait is difficult. It’s worth it though!
If it says your wait time will be 4-6 months, understand you likely won’t get any puppy offers from us until that time frame. We are very up front about our wait times so you don’t feel misled in any way about when you might get the much-anticipated puppy pick email. You will receive our monthly newsletter, and we have developed a comprehensive website, uploaded videos to YouTube, and have an active Instagram & private FaceBook group, to help you stay encouraged and engaged during the wait. We know this is the hardest part, so we’ve worked hard to give you as much information as possible to prepare for the arrival of you new family member.

Picking out your new puppy can be a scary task.
What if I don’t pick the right puppy? What will my puppy look like when it grows up? How big will it be full grown?  Don’t worry, AwesomeDoodle will give you advice about what to expect from your puppy, as far as temperament, size, and colors.

We’ll tell you about the behaviors and personalities about the sire and dam (you can read more about them here), and let you know what you can expect from your puppy as it gets older. Once you pick your puppy, you’ll get to watch it 24/7 on our LIVE, quality puppycams, and you’ll get weekly videos and high quality pictures of your puppy as well. After just a couple weeks, you’ll feel bonded to your puppy. While each puppy will have it’s own unique personality that you will grow to love, the puppies will all have very similar temperaments.  Watch the video below to learn more about the puppy pick process.

Occasionally, we get a request from someone looking for a particular “personality.” They ask us if they can evaluate puppies and have the “pick of the litter” based on what they observe while they are here. Since our families pick their puppies when they are a week old, of course, we can’t evaluate personality when they are that young. Even if you came here and visited when the puppies are 6 weeks old, it’s still impossible to pick based on the personality they are displaying at that time. I’ve seen the most “rambunctious” puppy at 6 weeks, turn into a calm angel at 8 weeks, and visa versa. For example, let’s say you come visit when “Puppy A” is sleepy, and “Puppy B” is having an energy blast. They could be demonstrating behaviors out of the ordinary, simply because of their energy level at the time.

Puppies don’t even start to come into their real personality until they are 8-10 weeks old, and it doesn’t fully develop until they are about 4 months old. It is up to US, and YOU, to shape our puppy’s behavior into that perfect, well-rounded dog. As we talked about above, “temperament” is going to be well-balanced with any of our dogs. “Behaviors” you can shape, and personality… we love our dog no matter what their personality.  Any breeder who says you can accurately predict personality and behaviors at 6-7 weeks old, simply doesn’t understand, or is lying to you to make you feel good.

If you’re looking for a service dog from AwesomeDoodle, you can pick a puppy and watch it grow to 8 weeks old. Starting at 2 weeks, you will get photos and videos from us, and we will talk about about your puppy’s health, behaviors, and personality as it unfolds. If a puppy ever demonstrates behaviors that we don’t think would be good for your family, then we will let you know, and give you the option pick a different dog from another litter. Even at 8 weeks, it is difficult to tell, but usually by that age we can make a fair guess.
